Viešnagės tikslas buvo paprastas – pamokos, tačiau tikslo įgyvendinimas sudėtingas – pamokos turėjo būti vedamos ne gimtąja, o anglų kalba, be to, jos turėjo būti pritaikytos skirtingų gebėjimų mokiniams ir būtinai orientuotos į sėkmę.

Challenges – power!

Many would state that living quietly is great. There would also be those who would add that working calmly, without stress, is also great. However, these thoughts can be refuted by the teachers of Vilnius Gabija Gymnasium. They claim that challenges are great, because only they encourage a person to strive, act and thus improve.

The confirmation of this statement took place from March 18 to March 24, when English language teacher expert Jolanta Antanavičienė, mathematics teacher expert Irma Zaveckaitė, economics teacher methodologist Laura Stašauskienė, biology teacher methodologist Violeta Aniūnienė and French language teacher methodologist Ana Baranovskaja visited Bulgaria’s city Provadia. They were brought to this city by the continuation of the „Observing – Valuing – Growing“ project. The purpose of the stay was simple – lessons, but the implementation of the goal was complex – the lessons had to be conducted in English, not the native language, and they had to be adapted to students of diverse abilities and necessarily focused on success. With the addition of innovative teaching methods and an unfamiliar environment, the goal became weighty.

However, any challenge – not an obstacle if there is a will to test yourself. The students of „ДИМИТАР БЛАГОЕВ“ school also showed their desire to test themselves by actively participating in the lessons. This activity was especially needed in mathematics lessons, where they were introduced to the axioms of space geometry, the mutual position of two lines in space, and learned to calculate the angles between two lines in space. Since stereometry is a difficult science, as it requires a developed spatial vision, the students were presented with a lot of visual material. GeoGebra was used to comprehend the theory, while group work helped to overcome the difficulties that arose.

Curiosity helps to overcome challenges – this is another truth that both the aforementioned teachers and the students they teach in Bulgaria discovered. You will say, how to arouse that curiosity? Simply! It is necessary to use inclusive education, bringing the taught material to life. This is exactly how the economics lessons taught by teacher Laura were conducted. She interested her students with the question: „Where would you invest a million euros won in the lottery?“ The students quickly and willingly started searching for the answer, which led to the creation of an individual investment portfolio and the calculation of the investment return. On the way, investment rules were discussed, it was explained why it is not acceptable to invest all the money in one product, which investment products can be chosen in general. It was also learned why cryptocurrency is not considered an investment. In the lesson, the discussion was replaced by a learning process based on calculations, the method of learning from one’s mistakes was used to consolidate knowledge (when the correct answer is given and the student signs the grade himself). Mentimeter app was used for reflection.

Actualization of the problem that has arisen also helps to overcome challenges. After all, this is especially important for young people, for whom it is crucial to be able to change themselves in a switching environment, to solve those problems and (what is especially meaningful today) to improve the world. This was helped by entrepreneurship. While working in groups of 3-4 students, they had to make a product/item with one part moving from the personal belongings they had. Then create an advertisement, sell your product at auction and calculate the profit. The main criterion of evaluation is profit. During the discussion, the students stated that profit is not enough for a long-term business, creativity and teamwork are very important, maybe even the most crucial.

Biology and language (English and French) lessons also confirmed that teamwork helps to overcome any difficulties. Active teaching methods were used in biology classes, which encouraged improvement and provided new experiences not only to the students, but also to the teacher herself – after all, when preparing for the lessons, it was necessary to look for more stimulating work methods, tasks, to deepen knowledge of the English language – this encouraged improvement, forced to withdraw from comfort zone and allowed to experience the joy of discovery. While learning French, the students relied on the newly presented material (active vocabulary of the topic, illustrations), performed various tasks, learned about body parts and named 5-10 of them. They also tried working with the Wordwall app and assessed their work by answering questions. English lessons also encouraged team work. Here, the students learned new thematic vocabulary, which they used to describe pictures and create dialogues. The 11th grade students who were learning to write a paragraph according to the ‘BURGER’ method also had to be creative.

One of the meanings of the word „challenge“ is an invitation to a fight, to contest. It’s lovely when such an invitation is related to knowledge, education. After all, then you have to fight with yourself, which allows you to evaluate your strengths, understand what has already been achieved, and see what is still possible (and necessary!) to strive for. Therefore, it is safe to say that the challenge of the project „Observing – Valuing – Growing“ is power, because it gave strength to both sides that accepted it. After all, observing others, learning from each other, developing and growing is really great.
